Echizen Old Kiln Museum
The town of Echizen in Fukui is the home of Echizen ware, one of Japan's six ancient kilns. Echizen Old Kiln Museum opened in October 2017 inside Echizen Pottery Village, a center for Echizen ware-related workshops, shops, and a park. The former home (built in 1835) of Kyuemon Mizuno, the foremost figure in Echizen kiln research, has been moved to the grounds, and his valuable research materials are exhibited.
Echizen Pottery Village
Echizen Pottery Village is centered around the vast Echizen Pottery Park and has three facilities: the museum, pottery workshop, and teahouse. Visitors can have fun learning about Echizen ware from various perspectives, such as the Hand Making Course to freely experience pottery using actual Echizen ware clay, the Echizenyaki-no-Yakata where you can purchase Echizen ware, and restaurants serving Fukui's local cuisine, Echizen oroshi soba noodles. Many studios and galleries of artists engaging in creative activities are located near the village, and kiln owners from around the prefecture gather for the annual Echizen Pottery Festival held in May.
