Wish Upon the Stars at Japan's Colorful Tanabata Festival

The beautiful love story of Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are only allowed to meet once a year, has been told in Japan since ancient times.
Sendai plays host to the largest and most popular Tanabata Festival, but there are many others held all around Japan. You’ll find most festivals set in shopping arcades, heavily adorned with beautiful strips of paper and other colorful decorations hanging from above. Festival goers can write wishes on colorful washi paper (Japanese traditional paper) to hang on the tree.
Enhance your experience and get in the spirit by wearing a yukata to the festival.

While the official date for Tanabata is July 7, the various festivals are held on different days throughout summer. On the night of the 7th, people write their wish on tanzaku (a colorful strip of washi paper), hang it from the bamboo, then make a wish upon the stars.

Hofu Tenmangu Shrine’s Tanabata Festival in Yamaguchi has been held in early July. Decorate colorful wishing trees, stroll among stunning umbrella art in the Shinto Garden of Light, and partake in the Tanabata tea ceremony.

The small city of Iwakuni is best known for the Kintaikyo Bridge, its 350 year old wooden pedestrian bridge that becomes even more scenic during cherry blossom season. Traverse its 5 elegant wooden arches as they leapfrog across the Nishiki River on 4 large stone pillars. For lunch or dinner, try the various locally popular cuisines, including “fugu” pufferfish. And one of Japan’s 3 greatest pagodas, Ruriko-ji Temple, is found in Yamaguchi. Notable for its cypress bark shingles, the five-story pagoda is designated a National Treasure.
