The Rail Kitchen Chikugo

A train journey that lets you fully savor Chikugo region

The Rail Kitchen Chikugo is a tourist train operated by Nishi-Nippon Railroad (Nishitetsu), a private railroad company in the Kyushu region. Comprised of three dining cars equipped with a total of 52 seats as well as a kitchen with a built-in pizza oven, the train travels through the picturesque rural backcountry between Nishitetsu Fukuoka and Omuta stations while passengers feast on fine meals. The red-checkered design of the train exterior is inspired by a kitchen cloth while the interior is made using regional resources, offering a 2.5-hour journey that lets you fully feel Chikugo through the five senses.

Learn from the past and discover anew the charms of Chikugo

The train interior is designed using traditional crafts from the areas along the railroad line including the bamboo knit ceiling made from Yame bamboo, beautiful Jojima oxidized silver roof tiles and Okawa furniture, imparting the charms of Chikugo known as the town of craftsmanship. Though the interior uses old, traditional crafts, it exudes a modern and casual atmosphere that you wouldn’t expect in a train, which allows you to discover anew the charms of the region.

Cuisine made with locally sourced fresh ingredients

Start your meal with a welcome drink of Amaou strawberry sparkling wine followed by various dishes such as Oki Town’s eryngii mushrooms and roasted Hakata beef for the main dish, all prepared in the train’s kitchen. Most of the ingredients are freshly sourced from areas along the railroad line in the Chikugo region. The highlight of the meal is the pizza topped with seasonal vegetables served hot from the oven. Trains are operated mainly on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, and brunch, lunch and dinner menus are available.
