Sunai no Sato

Village embodying the motto "Japanese confectionery coexists with its beautiful nature"
Located in a mountain village in the south of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, Sunai no Sato (The Home of Longevity) is a center of Japanese confectionery operated by Kano Shojuan, a long-established Japanese sweets shop based in prefecture. In addition to the Kano Shojuan headquarters and factory, the site is filled with various facilities that introduce Japanese traditions and cultures such as a teahouse, restaurant, charcoal burner cabin, papermaking workshop and pottery kiln. Time flows slowly and leisurely in this village, built on a vast hill preserving the natural landscape, with various wild trees and flowers blooming beautifully in each season and bearing fruit.
Sweets, fresh bread and Omi beef
Sunai no Sato aims to fuse agriculture and industry in confectionary making, using plums, yuzu citron and vegetables grown on the premises. The facilities also provide opportunities to gain extensive knowledge on the world of Japanese confectionery through experiencing tea ceremony and making sweets. Only carefully selected ingredients are used in the restaurant, where you can enjoy Omi beef, a specialty of Shiga Prefecture. There is also a bakery that makes use of the techniques of Japanese confectionary making, and the anpan (buns with red bean filling) created by a master confectioner is a must-try. Harvest festivals are held every season, so you will surely want to visit many times throughout the year.
