Hishima Islands

Camellias blossom on the islands where ships awaited favorable tides since ancient times

Hishima is the combined name for the islands of Ohbishima and Kobishima, located about 18 kilometers from Kasaoka Port in southwestern Okayama Prefecture. From February to March, over 300 wild camellia trees blossom and can be enjoyed in a 4-kilometer walk on the Hachimaki Road that wraps around Ohbishima. The island's camellia oil also makes a great souvenir.

Camellias of the Hishima Islands

Known as the "Camellia Island," numerous wild camellia trees grow around Ohbishima Island. Follow the red blossoms on a leisurely 4-kilometer walk on Hachimaki Road stretching along the hillside of the island, while enjoying the views of the Seto Inland Sea from various vistas. Be sure to look for the locally made camellia oil extracted from camellia seeds.

Lover's Cape

The Hishima Islands' open panorama offers many scenic points with unobstructed views of the Seto Inland Sea. One of the best viewpoints is the Lover's Cape along the Hachimaki Road, where you can enjoy a stunning 180-degree view of the beautiful sea. On the cape is the Joining Bell, created in hopes of bringing together not just lovers, but also commemorating the joining of various people who visit the site.
