Customers Using Medical Oxygen Cylinders

Oxygen cylinders are considered as dangerous goods and are therefore only allowed to be carried on board for medical purposes.

Submitting ANA's designated Medical Information Form (MEDIF) is required for the use of an oxygen cylinder on board.

Use of Personal Medical Oxygen Cylinders

Personal medical oxygen cylinders are allowed to be carried on board except for some routes.

Please contact the ANA Disability Desk as the specifications of the oxygen cylinders to be used on board need to be checked in advance. When doing so, please also refer to the Medical Oxygen Cylinder Checklist.

To board your flight, you must submit a Medical Information Form (MEDIF).

Requirements for Oxygen Cylinders

Your oxygen cylinder must meet the following requirements:

  1. It must be an approved cylinder and have the symbol to show that it has passed the relevant inspection.
  2. It must be gaseous oxygen for medical purposes, labeled as O2.
  3. It must have passed a stress test within the last 3 years (5 years for some cylinders).
    The maximum size of medical oxygen cylinders permitted to be carried on board is 70 cm in height and 10 cm in diameter, and they must not weigh more than 5 kg per cylinder (requirement by the Civil Aeronautics Act of Japan).

  • Portable oxygen cans and oxygen packs for sports, and liquid oxygen are not permitted to be carried on board nor checked in.
  • As the laws and regulations of the US prohibit carry on and check in of personal oxygen cylinders, customers on ANA flights to and from the US are required to use rental devices on board. (More than 6 cylinders are not permitted on one single flight.)
    Please note that it is prohibited to carry on and check in personal medical oxygen cylinders on flights departing from China.
  • Handling procedures for oxygen cylinders may be different depending on the country.

Codeshare Flights

For codeshare flights operated by our partner airlines, the regulations of the relevant partner airline will apply. Special assistance on such flights may differ from that offered by ANA. For details, please contact the partner airline operating the flight directly.

Japan Domestic Flights

Personal medical oxygen cylinders are allowed on board codeshare flights.

International Flights

Only customers using ANA-operated flights reserved with an ANA flight number are eligible. (Customers with tickets reserved with the flight number of the partner airline are not eligible.)

Seat Preferences

Please note that for safety reasons emergency exit row seats are not available for customers who need assistance.

  • * Your assigned seat may be changed without prior notice due to changes in aircraft type and other unavoidable reasons.
  • * Some Japan domestic fares are not eligible for online advance seat reservation.

Oxygen Cylinder Rentals (Paid Service)

Oxygen Cylinder Rentals (Prior Reservation Required / Paid Service)

This is a paid rental service for oxygen cylinders including mask and cannula.

The rental period is from boarding to disembarkation.

Rental oxygen cylinders are only available for use on board.

Please prepare personal oxygen cylinders for use at the airport before your flight, when connecting, and after arrival.

Since oxygen cylinders must be reserved by a certain deadline, please contact the ANA Disability Desk in advance. A medical certificate is required for the use of rental oxygen cylinders. The number of oxygen cylinders to be rented will be calculated and arranged based on the oxygen flow rate required by the customer as diagnosed by the attending physician. We do not accept any change in the number of oxygen cylinders after the arrangement has been made for customer's health influence.

Respiration synchronizers are not available.

Due to the limited quantity available, there may be occasions when we cannot provide you.

Japan Domestic Flights
  • Reservation: 48 hours prior to departure
  • Fee: JPY3,000 per flight sector (regardless of number of cylinders)
  • Capacity: 400 liters/cylinder

Oxygen flow setting can be adjusted in the range of 0.25 - 6.0 liters per minute.

International Flights
  • Reservation: 96 hours prior to departure
  • Fee: JPY10,000 per cylinder
  • Capacity: 360 liters/cylinder

Oxygen flow setting can be adjusted in the range of 0.25 - 5.0 liters per minute.

Please arrive early at the airport in order to have leave enough time for necessary procedures.

Approximate Time of Arrival to the Airport

If you are going to use personal medical oxygen cylinders on board, please note that we may check your medical equipment at the check-in counter even if you have notified us in advance.

If you use the oxygen cylinder rental service, the medical oxygen cylinders will be handed to you on board the aircraft.

Pre-boarding Service

Pre-boarding service is available for passengers who need assistance.

If you wish to use the pre-boarding service, please inform the staff at the boarding gate. Once the aircraft preparations have been completed, you will be allowed to board first. Please note that depending on the flight status, this service may not be apply.

On Board

Our cabin attendants are not permitted to assist customers with handling and operating oxygen cylinders as these are considered medical treatment.

Any operational process must be handled by the customer or their escort.

Please prepare a tube long enough to connect the cylinder when stowed horizontally under the seat in front of you for use on board.

You may be asked to remove the carrier from the cylinder.

Oxygen cylinders loaded on board are for emergency purposes only and are not available for customers for ordinary usage.

Arrival

If you have requested assistance for disembarkation, please remain seated until our staff comes to your seat to escort you off the aircraft. Our staff will escort you to the arrival lobby or to the person meeting you for pickup. Please feel free to ask. Please inform us upon reservation, or contact the ANA Disability Desk in advance.
