Daisenji Temple

Immerse yourself in the beautiful nature of Mount Daisen, the highest mountain of the Chugoku region. Discover its history as a "Sacred Mountain" and visit Daisenji, a temple over 1000 years old.

Daisenji, a Temple Where You Can Feel the Four Seasons

Mount Daisen is the highest mountain of the Chugoku region of Japan at ‎1,729 m. An object of faith since ancient times, it was once a sacred mountain where it was prohibited to set foot. Now, it offers lush greenery in summer and spring, beautiful leaves in autumn and snow in winter.

Built in the 8th century, the Daisenji Temple stands on Mount Daisen, surrounded by a luxurious forest. Since the Heian Period (794-1185) it prospered with the mountain ascetic practice of Shugendo, so much so that it could rival Mount Hiei in Shiga Prefecture and Mount Koya in Wakayama Prefecture. At the peak of its prosperity it hosted about 160 temples and 3,000 monks were stationed here. Its decline started with the beginning of the Meiji Period (1868-1912). However, the main hall, the Ogamiyama Shrine with its complex Shinto shrine structure, and a few other buildings can still be visited.

Zazen Experience

It is possible to practice zazen meditation in one of the temple's halls, guided by a local monk who will also tell you about the history of Daisenji and the surrounding area. Small to large groups are welcome. By calming your mind and meditating, you'll be able to imagine those prosperous times when monks gathered here in pursuit of knowledge.
