Northern Alps (Karasawa Cirque)

Enjoy stunning views and outdoor activities in the Northern Alps
Part of the Japanese Alps, the Northern Alps is a series of 2,000- to 3,000-meter-high mountains where visitors can enjoy magnificent views, amazing flora and fauna, as well as outdoor activities. While the high mountains seem challenging at first sight, there are also trails for beginners, so climbers of all levels can enjoy mountaineering.
Breathtaking autumn leaves
Karasawa Cirque is a popular autumn foliage hiking spot. Formed by glacial erosion and approximately 2 kilometers in diameter, the cirque is surrounded by the peaks of Mount Hotaka, creating stunning scenery. It is especially beautiful in the autumn foliage season, painted in fiery red and yellow leaves.
Historic Matsumoto Castle and beautiful mountain views
Marvel at the photogenic scenery of the historic castle against the backdrop of the Japanese Alps. The dignified black castle and the pure white snowscape of the Japanese Alps create a beautiful contrast. Matsumoto Castle is a designated National Treasure, with a five-storied, six-floor castle keep that is the oldest of its kind in Japan. Built over five centuries ago, the castle is a valuable piece of Japanese history. When visiting, take some time to also explore the surrounding castle town.
Winter activities in powder snow
The area is also a premier spot for winter activities. With 3,000-meter-high mountains, the Northern Alps has a wonderful natural environment that creates amazing powder snow, even serving as the site of the Winter Olympic Games in 1998. Enjoy the quality snow at the numerous ski resorts in the area, suitable for both beginners and advanced skiers/snowboarders. Moreover, there are many hot springs nearby, providing you with the perfect opportunity to warm up and rejuvenate from the cold.
