Uwajima Castle
The castle tower of Uwajima Castle, which is counted as one of the 12 remaining original castle towers, has been designated an Important Cultural Property. The Castle is built on top of (approximately 80m above the sea) in the plain in central Uwajima.
This castle was built by Todo Takatora, a military commander renowned for castle construction, from 1596 to 1601. In 1615, Date Hidemune, the eldest son of Date Masamune, entered the castle.
Since then, it was inhabited by generations of the Date clan.
The current castle has been reconstructed since becoming the resident castle of the Date clan, but it keeps the same style of the castle as when Todo Takatora first built it.
