Miyajima
Itsukushima Shrine has an impressive appearance befitting its status as one of Japan’s top shrines. This majestic work of architectural beauty has perfected Shinden-zukuri style and has a bold and unique structure over the sea. It was built into its current structure in the 12th century by military leader Taira no Kiyomori. The shrine’s contrast with the swathes of greenery in the background is another aspect of its dazzling beauty. It was registered as a World Heritage site in 1996.
This shopping street is lined by shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs such as Miyajima rice scoops, Miyajima carvings, and momiji manju cakes. There are also many restaurants where you can enjoy Miyajima’s specialty dishes made of oysters and conger eel.
Anago Meshi (broiled conger eel on rice) is a must-eat dish when visiting Miyajima, the World Heritage site upon which Itsukushima Shrine stands. You soon get addicted to the special sauce drizzled upon the tender eel and warm rice.
Mount Misen is the highest point of the island, standing 535m tall. From the peak, you can look out upon the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea and the mountain ranges of Shikoku. Mount Misen has long been believed to be a mountain where gods reside, and its Virgin Forest has been designated a Natural Monument. The view from the ropeway also makes for some outstanding scenery.
