On the Sanriku Coast in Iwate Prefecture lie the magnificent Kitayamazaki Cliffs soaring as high as 200 meters that were formed due to major volcanic activities dating back 130 million years. Stretching across 8 kilometers, the rugged cliffs feature sculpted rocks and mysterious caves. Stunning in every season, the Kitayamazaki Cliffs never fail to impress visitors.
Kitayamazaki Observatory
Awarded the highest rating in the "natural resource: coast" category of National Tourist Resource Evaluation by the Japan Travel Bureau Foundation, the dynamic coastline of Kitayamazaki offers stunning views anytime of the year. From the observation deck which juts out to the sea, visitors can enjoy splendid sceneries of the cliffs both in sunshine and in a thick fog formed by a cold dry wind from the mountains. The entire area glows in red in autumn, while the snow in winter creates beautiful shades of black and white just like a sumi-e painting. There are three observation decks. The first one has a barrier-free wooden deck while the second one is known for its breathtaking views. The third one can be accessed via a walking trail surrounded by trees.
