The Giant Camphor Park of Kawago

The Giant Camphor Park of Kawago is located in Wakaki Town, Takeo City. The most distinctive features about this park are the strikingly large Giant Camphor tree and the water wheel.
In the adjacent Tametomo Hall, visitors can enjoy performances of karakuri puppets themed around local legends. There are also sales of vegetables harvested in Wakaki, processed goods, and “water wheel rice” that has been polished by the water wheel of the Giant Camphor Park.

The fifth biggest tree in Japan! Recharge with the power of nature from the Giant Camphor of Kawago

The Giant Camphor of Kawago is designated as a National Natural Monument (under the name Kawago no Kusu). It is said to be over 3,000 years old, and has watched over people’s lives since ancient times.
The tree stands at 25 meters tall, has a trunk circumference of 21 meters, and has a branch spread of 27 meters in the direction of north, south, east and west. It might be hard to imagine from just these numbers alone, but when you see it with your own eyes, you will be dazzled by the sheer size of it.
Legend has it that the noted Buddhist priest Gyoki visited in the Nara period and carved a sculpture of the Goddess of Mercy into a part of the tree and embedded a six-armed Goddess of Mercy into its head.

Learn about the legends of the local area through karakuri puppets

Legend has it that the samurai Minamoto no Tametomo slayed a serpent monster on Mount Kurokami in Yamauchi Town. This is also part of Takeo City.
At the Tametomo Hall, which is named after this samurai, the legend of the slaying of the serpent monster is played out using karakuri puppets.

"Water Wheel Rice" made with the large water wheel in Giant Camphor Park

At the Giant Camphor of Kawago Park, aside from the huge camphor, there is also a large water wheel.
Rice is slowly polished over six hours using the natural power of the water wheel. This method reduces the heat created due to friction with a usual rice mill, bringing out the intrinsic delicious flavor of rice.
A range of products is also available, such as vegetables and processed goods from Wakaki that perfectly complement the water wheel rice, and sweets to accompany tea. You’ll find yourself reaching for some of these irresistible products!

Tametomo Hall

Tametomo Hall brings guests heartfelt hospitality, and offers tea and pickles.
Relax and enjoy the passage of time in Wakaki Town.
