The Giant Camphor Park of Kawago

The Giant Camphor of Kawago is designated as a National Natural Monument (under the name Kawago no Kusu). It is said to be over 3,000 years old, and has watched over people’s lives since ancient times.
The tree stands at 25 meters tall, has a trunk circumference of 21 meters, and has a branch spread of 27 meters in the direction of north, south, east and west. It might be hard to imagine from just these numbers alone, but when you see it with your own eyes, you will be dazzled by the sheer size of it.
Legend has it that the noted Buddhist priest Gyoki visited in the Nara period and carved a sculpture of the Goddess of Mercy into a part of the tree and embedded a six-armed Goddess of Mercy into its head.

At the Giant Camphor of Kawago Park, aside from the huge camphor, there is also a large water wheel.
Rice is slowly polished over six hours using the natural power of the water wheel. This method reduces the heat created due to friction with a usual rice mill, bringing out the intrinsic delicious flavor of rice.
