Tadami Line

The much-talked-about scenic railway on social media as the "most romantic train ride in the world"

The Tadami Line is a secluded railway that stretches 135 kilometers from Aizuwakamatsu Station in Fukushima Prefecture to Koide Station in Uonuma, Niigata Prefecture. The local line is popular for its incredibly scenic route across all seasons, but the scenery of the train crossing the bridge over the river is particularly picturesque. Each season has its own beautiful scenery, which fascinates photography fans around the world.

Capturing the stunning scenery in a photo

The Daiichi (No. 1) Tadami River Bridge is particularly known as a photogenic spot along the Tadami Line, but there are also various scenic spots such as the Daini (No. 2), Daisan (No. 3), Daiyon (No. 4) and Megane bridges as well as the small villages scattered around the train route. Beautiful landscapes can be seen in different seasons: the gorgeous cherry blossoms in spring, the lush greenery in summer, the colorful autumn foliage and the spectacular snowy scenery in winter. Enjoy the scenic views from the train window or hop off to explore the area and find your own perfect photo spot.

In a joint effort with local residents toward restoration

Due to the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 as well as the torrential downpour in Niigata and Fukushima prefectures in July of the same year, some of the bridges on the Tadami Line were washed away while landslides led the tracks to collapse. Most of the sections on the Tadami Line have been restored owing to the tremendous recovery efforts; however, the line between Aizu-Kawaguchi and Tadami stations continues to be unusable due to serious damage and has been replaced by a bus service. Backed by the support from local residents, restoration work of the closed line is underway with the aim of resuming operation by 2021.
