The Railway Museum just got even more exciting with the new South Building opened in July 2018
The Railway Museum opened its doors on October 14, 2007, the national Day of Railways commemorating the introduction of Japan's first railway. Here you can learn about railways from various angles through their history, technologies and more by getting up and close and familiar with the trains. In July 2018, the new South Building opened for an even more enriching experience.

An impressive collection of 41 railway cars including outdoor displays
The Rolling Station Stock is the largest exhibit room in the museum with 36 actual railway cars on display. The lineup of the most popular trains from over the years is a sight to behold. While the trains now quietly rest in place, the strategic use of dynamic sounds, lights, videos, and information-communication technologies bring the trains to life, letting visitors experience their past stories and how they ran in their days. Additional display cars can be found near the North Building behind the Miniature Driving Train Park.

Authentic driving experience on the Miniature Driving Train
You can operate the Miniature Driving Train on a track set amid an expanse of lawn and trees that stops at the four stations of Manseibashi, Iidamachi, Shiodome, and Ryogokubashi. It's an authentic driving experience that requires slowing down at curves, observing speed limits at points and awaiting traffic signals in accordance with the preceding train. Railway fans of all ages can become a train driver! (Numbered tickets are handed out. 200 yen per train. Up to three people per train. Driver must be an elementary school student or older.)

Fun-filled Kids Plaza for younger train fans
The Kids Plaza is a play area for younger train fans in four zones: Getting into Character Zone where you can play with toys to make your own train bento box; Drawing Zone that lets you draw freely on a whiteboard; Plarail Zone where you can play with Plarail train toys; and the Baby and Toddler Zone with safe toys. In the Kids Cafe located in Kids Plaza, parents and guardians can enjoy dining with peace-of-mind as they watch over the children having fun with trains. Be sure to check out the original menus, or relax and enjoy light hand-held snacks.
