Fugan Canal Kansui Park
There are so many beautiful and famous tourist spots in Fugan Canal Kansui Park in Toyama City, Toyama; such as the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design, Tenmon-kyo Bridge, the Fugan Canal, and Fugan Suijo Line cruises.
The park is a feast for both the eyes and the mouth, with the most beautiful Starbucks Coffee in the world, and a French restaurant “La Chance” overseen by Iron Chef Sakai Hiroyuki.
Top recommendations include the view from the park’s symbolic Tenmon-kyo Bridge; the plaza with a fountain popular among kids; the Fugan Suijo Line cruises that attract many passengers; and the dreamlike scene of the park lit up at night. The park can be enjoyed whatever the in every season, with some events such as fireworks and night illuminations.
Tenmon-kyo Bridge stands alongside the fountain and waterfall of the plaza as one of the symbols of Fugan Canal Kansui Park. From the observation towers at both end of the bridge, you can get a glimpse of the whole of Kansui Park, and there is a breathtaking view of the Tateyama Mountain Range. Both of the observation towers have elevators. Also, in the galleries inside the observation towers, there are panels featuring photographs and diagrams explaining the history of the Fugan Canal and an outline of Kansui Park. Both tiling and sturdy wooden planks are used for the surface of the bridge. The tiles have non-watering snow extinguishers, meaning that the bridge can be used in winter. The use of wood comes from the area’s history as a lumber yard.
The Fugan Suijo Line is a canal cruise starting from Kansui Park and passing through the Nakajima Lock Gate to the port town of Iwase. On the canal trip, which takes around one hour, you can enjoy the historic canal and its beautiful scenery. At the Nakajima Lock Gate, you can experience a “water elevator,” a rarity in Japan. There is a guide on board who kindly explains the history of the canal and the scenery seen from the boat, meaning you’re sure to leave satisfied. There are three boats in operation: Fugan and Sora (which can both carry 55 passengers) and Momiji (which can carry 11 passengers). You just have to try this relaxing boat trip.
Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design is an art gallery that opened in the summer of 2017 inside Fugan Canal Kansui Park, north of Toyama Station. At the gallery, you can view works from artistic masterminds active at the start of the 20th century such as Picasso and Chagall, as well as diverse 20th-century art such as surrealist and abstract art, and design works (posters, chairs and etc.) from artists representing Japan and Toyama. The rooftop garden, “Onomatopoeia Rooftop,” provides fun for all the family, featuring original playground equipment made by designer Sato Taku and a fuwa-fuwa (fluffy) dome air bouncer. There are so many ways you can encounter art up close at the museum―enjoy browsing a poster collection on touchscreen panels, participating in workshops in studios, and watching artists at work.
