Support for Customers with Pets

Important Notice

ANA will provide the utmost care so that your pet can travel comfortably. However, conditions on the aircraft are significantly different from your pet's everyday environment. This could impact your pet's health leading to weakness, injury, or death. Please be sure to read the precautions and carefully consider whether your pet is suited to transport.
In addition, ANA will not be liable for the death or injury of a pet that occurs during transport due to the pet's health/physical condition, etc., (including atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, noise), a pet's own unique nature, or if there is a defect in the cage used for transport.

Rules regarding the entry of pets differ depending on the country/region, and it may not be possible to check in a pet as baggage due to the laws and regulations of a country/region and its quarantine system. Documents required for the import/export of animals (export quarantine certificate, health certificate, import certificate, etc.) must be confirmed by the customer with the country/region of departure, the quarantine station at the country/region of destination, the embassy, etc. All necessary documents must be prepared in advance.

Environmental conditions inside the cargo room can affect your pet's health in a variety of ways, leading to weakness or injury.

Humidity/Temperature

The cargo room is air-conditioned and has humidity control, but the environment may differ from that of the customer cabin due to the effects of the outside air temperature and other factors.
The cargo room can become very hot in the summer due to high outside temperatures and reflected heat.
In addition, your pet will be in an open-air environment during the loading and unloading processes, so there may be significant temperature and humidity changes during both summer and winter.

Noise

Your pet may hear engine, mechanical, and wind noises when the aircraft takes off, lands, or is in flight, or noises from the engine or ground vehicles when being loaded/unloaded.

Lighting

During the flight, the lights in the cargo room will be off and the room will be dark.

About Pet Entry and Exit Regulations

Entry and exit regulations vary by country/region. Documents required for the import/export of animals (export quarantine certificate, health certificate, import certificate, etc.) must be confirmed by the customer with the country/region of departure, the quarantine station at the country/region of destination, the embassy, etc. All necessary documents must be prepared in advance.

The type of quarantine and documents required for the import of pets into Japan differs depending on the type of animal.

For customers wishing to transport dogs and cats

If you are importing dogs or cats, you need to notify the animal quarantine station at least 40 days before your arrival in Japan.
After acceptance of the advance notification, a "Approval of Import Inspection of Animals" will be issued. On the day of departure, please present it to the staff at the ANA check-in counter.
For dogs and cats imported from areas designated as rabies-free, if the microchip recorded on the export certificate is used to identify the animal, the holding period will be within 12 hours.
If the animal cannot be identified by microchip, the holding period may be up to 180 days.
For details, please check the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Animal Quarantine Station website.

For customers wishing to transport rodents (hamsters, guinea pigs, etc.) and birds

When importing animals such as rodents (hamsters, guinea pigs, etc.) and birds, an application form must be submitted to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (application form, health certificate, etc.).

    • * Since there is the risk of injury due to pets attacking each other, we do not accept multiple pets in one cage.
  • We only accept pet cages that comply with IATA regulations and can withstand air transport.
<Pet Cage Conditions> * All conditions must be met.
    • Sturdy top.
    • Durable materials (hard plastic, metal, wood, etc.).
    • Good ventilation.
    • Functional handle on the outside.
    • Equipped with a lock to prevent escape and physical contact.
    • Wheels that can be removed or fixed in place.
    • Appropriate size for your pet to stand, sit, sleep, and turn around freely.
    • Leak-proof bottom, such as pet sheets, to prevent liquids and waste from spilling out.
    • Cooling mats, suitable containers, and plates for drinking water and food should be provided depending on the condition of the pet and the time of transport (feeding during transit is not possible).
  • During the period from May 1 to October 31, we do not accept a small cage inside a larger cage or covers on cages due to the danger of poor ventilation.
  • Please note that for some countries/regions, pets may only be transported as cargo.

Please contact us by phone in advance for cage number limits and fees.

We are unable to transport a pet if the sum of the three sides (length, width, height) of the pet's cage is 292 cm (115 inches), or if the total weight of the pet and cage exceeds 45 kg (99 pounds).

You can check past mortality incidents on "Previous Instances of Pet Mortality".

Items to be confirmed and prepared by the customer in advance

Before the departure date

  • Pets who are not accustomed to staying in a pet cage for a long time are likely to feel stress, so it is recommended to accustom them before traveling.
  • If this trip is the first time for your pet to travel by airplane or if you are worried about them traveling by air, we recommend that you consult a veterinarian.
  • Please consult your veterinarian to get the appropriate vaccines for your pet.
  • For dogs, the vaccination specified by the Rabies Prevention Law must have been given within the past one year.

On the day of departure

Your pet may feel anxious if they sense a change in your attitude. When you leave for your trip, please reassure your pet and treat your pet in the same way as usual.

About meals

  • Once you have checked in your pet, your pet will not be able to eat, including during connection(s), so please give your pet food and water before checking in.
  • Fullness or hunger may cause your pet to feel sick, such as air sickness. Please allow your pet to have an appropriate amount of food and water.

Installation of a water supply device (nozzle type)

It is necessary to install a water supply device (nozzle type) to prevent heat stroke and dehydration of pets and to help calm them.

  • Tighten the lid of the water supply to prevent leakage and attach it to the kennel.
  • Only a nozzle type water supply device is accepted. We do not allow water bowls because there is the risk of water spilling.

Heating and cooling measures

  • Please provide cooling goods such as cooling pads and ice packs in the summer, and blankets and body warmers for pets in the winter.
  • Dogs and cats kept indoors may have a thick undercoat, so we recommend grooming of the undercoat when traveling during the summer.

About accidental ingestion

Please be aware that if there are toys in your pet's cage during the flight, your pet may accidentally swallow them due to the change in their environment.

Also, as with toys, there is a risk of the collar and leash being chewed on or getting entangled on your pet's body. The risk of the leash accidentally entangling is especially high, so please be sure to remove it. If you wish to keep on your pet's collar, make sure it is fitted properly around their neck and not loose.
