Hot springs, stargazing and hiking among colorful foliage in the Japanese autumn
With numerous mountainous areas and well-maintained trails, Japan offers many options for casual hiking and trekking. There are various activities you can enjoy in addition to hiking, such as the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (Toyama), equipped with a ropeway so families can hike together; Mount Kirishima (Kagoshima), where you can enjoy both hiking and hot springs within a national park; and staying overnight at Mount Tsurugi (Tokushima) for amazing stargazing. Trek along a trail that spans multiple prefectures and stay for an extended time to leisurely visit many sites along the way. The comfortable autumn climate around September through October makes it the perfect time to explore the vibrant foliage of the mountains.

The chairlift can take you up near the summit of Mount Tsurugi in Tokushima from mid-April to November for a relaxing hike, even for beginners. From there, gaze at the beautiful ridge line of the opposing Mount Jirogyu.
Hiking in autumn can be surprisingly chilly. When you are tired from walking, warm your heart and body with some “udon” noodles or curry rice at a mountain cabin.
Stay overnight at a mountain hut and enjoy gazing at the starry sky. The low light pollution around Mount Tsurugi means you may even be able to observe the Milky Way and taken in the fantastical scenery.
Mount Kirishima stretches across Kagoshima and Miyazaki. Take a circular stroll around the crater lake Onami Lake and enjoy the beautiful contrast of the clear blue water and autumn foliage.
