Tojinbo

Experience Tojinbo on a tour boat and see the spectacular scenery such as Candle Rock and Lion Rock!

Taking a tour boat is recommend to see Tojinbo in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. You can look up at the cliffs near the Lion Rock or the Candle Rock from sea level. Looking down from 25 meters above the sea-level and you will have one of the most splendid views in Fukui. The cliff wall has been honored since ancient times. It's said that there are only three places in the world, including Tojinbo, with rare geology such as unusually-shaped rocks stretched out about 1km along the coast and designated as Japanese natural treasure with a remote island floating on its end.

Cruising around the "Oike" cliffs from the sea, Lion Rock and Candle Rock looks like sitting and watching over Tojinbo. The cruise takes approximately 30 minutes. When the ship moves in between the sheer cliffs, by looking up, you are overwhelmed by a new sensation, quite different from the impression as you look down from the top of the cliff. You can enjoy the charm of Tojinbo by enjoying it from both above and below.

The best parts of sightseeing are the meals and souvenirs. In the Tojinbo, there are many lively establishments with great hospitality such as restaurants, fancy cafés with fresh seafoods vegetables, and souvenir shops full of local products. The lively shopping street is like a festival every day. Enjoy great shopping along with Tojinbo’s spectacular view.

Mikuni-cho, in Sakai City, where Tojinbo is, has a long history as a base for water transport logistics. Mikuni Minato, which is close to Tojinbo, was a major logistics hub where goods came in via the Kitamaebune shipping route from Kamigata (Kansai), Setouchi, San'in, Tohoku, and Hokkaido. However, the history and culture left by the Kitamaebune shipping route remains in the emotional townscapes, where lattice doors of the townhouses connect and the shadows of the tradesman of old remain on the historic buildings.
