Cherry Blossom Trees along Asuwa River
Asuwa River runs through central Fukui Prefecture. Approximately 600 cherry blossom trees line the riverside, said to be the most in all of Japan. This has earned it its reputation as a symbol of spring in Fukui. It has been chosen as one of the 100 top cherry blossom spots in Japan. A cherry blossom festival is held when the trees come into bloom, attracting many visitors.
The townscape of Hama-machi is full of atmosphere. As an entertainment district, it is one of the liveliest places on the Asuwa River that cuts through the center of Fukui City. Hama-machi used to be a place where ships docked in the Asuwa River to participate in maritime trade, meaning many materials used to pass through the area. In particular, the area was an important location on the Kitamaebune shipping route that prospered from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. Its direct connection to the sea earned it the name "Hama-machi" (shore town). The streets are also lined with long established eateries, making it a spot where you can get your fill of Fukui cuisine and geiko entertainment.
