Yokokan Garden
Yokokan Garden was the second home of the Matsudaira family, the former feudal family of the Fukui domain, located in the city of Fukui, Fukui Prefecture. The elegant shoin (drawing room) style architecture and garden make this one of the representative gardens of the mid-Edo period (1603-1868). Yokokan was designated as one of Japan's best sights in 1982, and constantly ranks among the top in the best Japanese garden list announced by a U.S. garden magazine.
Fukui Castle Ruins
Fukui Castle was built in 1606 by Hideyasu Yuki, the first feudal lord of the Fukui domain, and was representative of the Echizen Matsudaira family's prosperity for around 270 years. When first erected, the castle is said to have had a magnificent 37-meter tower and was surrounded by a triple moat, but these were lost in a great fire, leaving only part of the stone wall and moat today. In March 2018, the Yamazatoguchi-gomon, the gate opening toward the castle keep that was part of the original construction, was restored.
