The Eiheiji Lantern Festival is an annual summer tradition in the town of Eiheiji held on a Saturday at the end of August. Following sutra readings by high priests and young monks of Soto Zen sect's head temple Daihonzan Eiheiji Temple, around 10,000 glowing lanterns are floated down the river with thoughts of love, appreciation, and prayer for ancestors. The creation of a shimmering, dreamy belt of light on the river surface is an awe-inspiring yet solemn sight. It is the largest river lantern flowing ceremony (called "toro nagashi") of its kind in Japan and is followed by bright fireworks coloring the sky, reaching a climax for this parade of lights.
