Echizen Ono Castle
Echizen Ono Castle, a castle floating on a sea of clouds in the city of Ono, Fukui Prefecture
Located in the Ono basin surrounded by mountains on all sides, Echizen Ono Castle was built from around 1575, taking five years until completion. The keep stands on the 249-meter Mount Kameyama at the center of the city of Ono, and because the mountain looks as if it is floating when the castle town at its foot is covered in a sea of clouds, Echizen Ono Castle is often called "the castle in the sky."
Echizen Ono Castle, the mystical castle in the sky
Sighting of the mystical castle floating atop the morning mist is not an everyday occasion, and must meet the following weather conditions: high humidity the previous day and the significant temperature difference between the previous daytime and the morning of the viewing day; and light wind. These conditions are most often met from October to April, and "the castle in the sky" is likely to appear from dawn to 9:00. Mount Inuyama located on the west of Echizen Ono Castle is a great photo spot to capture the magical sight.
