Explore through the jungle to discover one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan
Take a sightseeing boat upstream along the Urauchi River that flows through Iriomote Island to the boat's boarding point and walk along the well-maintained path through the jungle for about 40 minutes. There, you will encounter the beautiful sight of Mariyudu Waterfall. The two-tiered waterfall featuring a round basin is 20 meters in length and boasts the largest amount of water in Okinawa despite being only 16 meters high. It is a great scenic spot that makes you feel at one with nature.

Mayagusuku Waterfall
Located upstream of the Urauchi River where it joins the Itajiki (Itachiki) River, the Mayagusuku Waterfall is known as the most spectacular and magnificent sight among the many waterfalls found on the island. Until recently, the waterfall didn't even have a name because it's hidden deep in the forest. The white cascade that falls down from about 15 meters high through the stairs-like bedrock spanning over approximately 25 meters is unique and truly mystical. Mayagusuku means a "cat castle," which also connotes a castle where the Iriomote wild cat, a designated special natural treasure endemic to the island, inhabits.

Kanbire Waterfall
As you walk further upstream for 15 more minutes from Mariyudu Waterfall, the Kanbire Waterfall that carries the name of "seat for the god" comes into sight. It is considered a sacred spot where gods from 15 locations around Iriomote Island congregated to discuss about the creation of the island. It has a series of low cliffs with water cascading down in a wide flow for about 200 meters. The water runs fast over the rock surface of the riverbed and causes splashes of mist, creating a powerful and spectacular sight.
