Sakata sake
(Sakata Yume-no-Kura)

Try sampling the finest sake produced in Sakata City, an area blessed with rich natural resources
Sakata City, located by the Japan Sea and at the foot of Mount Chokai, boasts a nature-rich environment. Well known for fine-quality sake produced from rice cultivated in the vast Shonai Plain and water drawn from the water system fed from Mount Chokai, its sake culture has become fairly established mainly due to the passion and tenacious efforts of local breweries. Luckily, you can sample sake from different breweries for 110 yen per cup at Sakata Yumenokura at the Sankyo Soko Rice Storehouses.

Kitamae Yokocho: Sakata Yanagi Koji Food Village
This establishment, consisting of 10 small restaurants, offers fun and a lively atmosphere for those sake lovers who want to enjoy drinking their favorite beverage with delicious local food from the Shonai region, such as seafood and the local brand pork. The concept for this "village" is from Sakata's symbol of prosperity, the Kitamae-bune cargo ship and the Yanagikoji Market, which used to be a major shopping hub of the area.
Sakata's ramen noodles: Kind to the stomach even when hungover
Yamagata Prefecture is the top consumer of ramen noodles in Japan, and Sakata is the main area for ramen culture on the Japan Sea side of this prefecture. The soy sauce-flavored soup has a light seafood base, typical of a place located by the sea. Most of the local ramen restaurants offer their own homemade noodles, prepared with a good amount of water to achieve elasticity and the perfect al dente finish, and thinly skinned wonton, both of which match perfectly with the seafood-based soup. It looks pretty simple, but has a flavor that keeps customers coming back time after time.
