Snow Monsters of Miyagi Zao
Ride in snow tractors in Miyagi Zao's "snow monster" tour
Soft rime, a spectacular winter scenery of ice disposition on trees, are also called "snow monsters" because of their hulking shapes. The unique natural phenomenon can only be seen in limited locations such as the Hakkoda Mountains in Aomori Prefecture and Mount Hachimantai in Iwate Prefecture. At Miyagi Zao, visitors can tour the fields of soft rimes in a heated snow tractor, The Wild Monster. Listen to the commentary by an exclusive guide, and at the viewing spot, step out to the field and see the amazing art created by nature up close.
Miyagi Zao Sumikawa Snow Park
The popular ski resort offers a variety of activities such as camping and star gazing during the green season, and skiing and soft rime tours in the winter. The great quality snow with an almost no icy surface is particularly popular among snowboarders. There are various courses such as the Sumikawa Slope, which is best for beginners, and the Atomi Slope, great for intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders. From the Kumowaku Terrace cafe open from spring to fall enjoy a panoramic view of the Zao Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean.
