Hachiman-bori Canal
An important artery of the castle town that led to the success of Omi merchants
Hachiman-bori Canal is a waterway in Omihachiman, Shiga Prefecture, which once played an important role as a transportation route and in the lives of residents. The scenery from the Azuchi-Momoyama period (16th to early 17th century) remains even now, and is often used as a filming location for period dramas. During the canal tour on a yakatabune cruise boat, you can enjoy the picturesque scenery of the four seasons and explore the town’s history.
History of Hachiman-bori Canal
The riverside district of Omihachiman and Hachiman-bori Canal was selected as the first important cultural landscape of Japan. Hachiman-bori Canal was established when Toyotomi Hidetsugu, a samurai general of the late 16 century, built a castle on Mount Hachiman. By connecting the canal to Lake Biwa, ships that traverse through the lake made stops there, and goods and people gathered to develop the castle town. In later years the canal was dilapidated with the change of times, but has since been restored. Today, visitors can enjoy a yakatabune boat tour, feeling the breeze and gazing at the traditional scenery of white clay warehouses and stone walls. Cherry blossom trees and willow trees are planted along the canal, creating a beautiful landscape for an enjoyable visit in all seasons.
