Uchiko
Uchiko had a thriving wax industry from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. There are historical buildings dotted all around the town.
The gently sloped streets of Yokaichi and Gokoku, lined with around 120 traditional townhouses, make the perfect spot for a stroll around town. Many of the old townhouses are put to use as cafés or for handiwork. On your stroll, you can enjoy the view of precious buildings that have been designated Important Cultural Properties such as The Japanese Wax Museum & Kamihaga Residence, which tells the story of the wax industry that supported the town’s development, and the Uchiko-za theatre, an authentic theatre built in the Taisho period.
