Hanayome Noren Museum

A small museum that lets you get an up-close look at Ishikawa’s “Hanayome Noren” bridal custom
“Hanayome Noren,” or bridal curtain, is a custom started in the 1800s that still goes on in Noto, Kaga, and Ecchu regions of the former Kaga Domain. On the day of the wedding, the curtain is hung at the entrance of the Buddhist alter room of the groom’s house for the bride to pass through. Mostly made using a traditional Kaga-yuzen technique, these expensive and gorgeous curtains are an exclusive luxury used only once and are usually put in a chest of drawers after the wedding.
The bridal curtain experience
The museum exhibits a number of rare bridal curtains that you can observe up close. It lets you enjoy a variety of colors, styles, and materials as they differ depending on each era. In addition, local wedding culture such as wedding costumes and items are also on display. Visitors can actually experience the custom by wearing a shiromuku (white bridal kimono) or an uchikake (gorgeously patterned bridal kimono) and going through the bridal curtain. Traditional men’s costumes are also available.
Feel the remnants of nostalgic Japan on Ipponsugi-dori
Hanayome Noren Museum is located on Ipponsugi-dori, a street boasting a history of over 600 years lined with a number of machiya, or traditional townhouses, which lets you feel the nostalgia of Japan. Some of these buildings have been registered as tangible cultural properties. In addition, the street has shops called kataribe-dokoro, where visitors can learn about the local products, history, and lifestyles from shop owners.
