Katsurahama Beach

Katsurahama beach is one of the most picturesque locations in Kochi. This arch-shaped beach is located at the entrance of Urado Bay, in between Cape Ryuzu and Cape Ryuo. The backdrop of thick pine greenery, the five-colored beach gravel, and the deep blue sea come together to form a picturesque scene almost like a miniature garden.

This beach has long been known as a popular moon-viewing spot, and the lyrics of Yosakoi-bushi, a folk song, say “the best place to view the moon is Katsurahama.” On the easternmost part of the beach, Cape Ryuzu, a bronze statue of Sakamoto Ryoma looks down upon the Pacific Ocean. Ryoma was a patriot at the end of the Edo Period. The whole of the beach is known as “Katsurahama Park,” and there is an aquarium as well as the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum towards the hills.
