Fukushima
Ouchi-juku is an old post town with a historical atmosphere thanks to its preserved Edo-era (1603-1868) scenery. Old houses with thatched roofs line both sides of the old highway, surrounded by nature deep in the mountains. It's as if you have traveled back in time to the Edo period.
Never-been-conquered Tsuruga Castle, the symbol of Aizuwakamatsu, has the beautiful red clay roofed castle tower which is found only in this castle in Japan. It is especially beautiful during the autumn leaves and cherry blossom seasons, and the view from the castle itself is also magnificent.
Away from the sea and surrounded by mountains, Aizu is famous for its preserved dried seafood and simple traditional dishes made with mountain vegetables such as mushrooms and wild plants. You can also enjoy local gourmet food such as Aizu sauce katsudon (cutlet bowl) and Aizu curry-flavored yakisoba (fried noodles).
The Tadami Line runs along the valley of the Tadami River, against the backdrop of the magnificent nature of Aizuwakamatsu and Okuaizu. Enjoy the mountain village scenery and the beauty of the valley in all seasons. The spectacular view of bridges and trains is also a wonderful attraction.
Kitakata ramen is characterized by its soy sauce-based rich soup and thick, curly noodles. Each store has its own distinctiveness and originality, be it in their custom-made soy sauce, soup, noodles, or roast pork.
Fukushima's sakes are varied in flavor and personality. There are more than fifty sake breweries in the prefecture, including a long-established store that has been in business for over 300 years. Sake tasting is available at the Fukushima Prefecture Souvenir Shop, where you can compare different varieties of sake produced in the prefecture.
