    Matsuyama Castle

    Matsuyama Castle has one of the 12 towers remaining in Japan that has survived from the Edo period (1603-1868), with 21 of its structures designated as important cultural properties. Standing on a mountaintop at 132 meters elevation, the castle tower offers a sweeping view of the city, and is beautifully lit up after sunset.

    Dogo Onsen

    Said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan, Dogo Onsen has a rich history of around 3,000 years. The main bathhouse, Dogo Onsen Honkan, is the center of the hot spring resort town with lively shopping streets, restaurants and picturesque inns.

    Iya Valley and Iyanokazura Bridge

    Waters from the 1,955 meter-high Mount Tsurugi flow down the Iya River to the deep valley of pristine nature that has been attracting the eyes of the world's travel magazines. Take a thrilling walk across the swinging Iyanokazura Bridge, a suspension bridge made from wild hardy kiwi vines (charge required).

    Awa Odori Kaikan

    With over 400 years of history, Awa Odori is a symbolic traditional dance of Tokushima Prefecture. Enjoy energetic performances by the hall's dance team during the day and by one of the city's famous troops in the evenings. If you feel the urge to join, jump right in during the dance experience section of the performances.

    Naruto Strait

    Naruto is known for the whirlpools produced by the powerful currents caused by the tidal variation of the Seto Inland Sea and Kii Channel. Take a ferry to observe the whirlpools up close, and feel the force of nature as the currents speed up to over 20 kilometers per hour.

    Ritsurin Garden

    Awarded the highest Michelin rating, this cultural treasure garden portrays the four seasons through a tableau of beautiful fall foliage, cherry blossoms, plums, irises and lotus flowers together with over 1,000 delicately maintained pines. Visit in the early morning to appreciate the picturesque landscape all to yourself.

    Kotohira-gu Shrine

    Famous for the long stretch of stone stairway, it takes 785 steps to reach the main shrine and another 1,368 steps to worship at the inner shrine of Konpira-san. The town itself is full of charm with many cultural assets, and streets around the shrine are lined with shops and restaurants serving "udon" noodles, a specialty of Kagawa.

    How to Get There

    Fly from Haneda Airport to Matsuyama Airport in approximately 1 hour 35 minutes. Traveling around Shikoku is most convenient by rental car, but you can also take a leisurely tour using buses and trains.
