Townscape of Udatsu, Wakimachi
Traditional Townscape of Udatsu, Home of Indigo Dyeing
Wakimachi at Mima City is the town where indigo merchant enjoyed prosperity in the Edo period (1603–1868). Stretching along 430 meters, there is “Udatsu” street or townscape as a symbol of wealth. The oldest existing building was built in 1707. Besides Udatsu, there are “Mushikomado” and “Shitomido” that also have unique architecture with. It was designated as an important national preservation district for its traditional buildings.
In Udatsu Street, Wakimachi where indigo merchants develop since the Edo period (1603–1868), you can try to dye your indigo handkerchief with your design (reservation required). You also can enjoy making accessories such as Misanga and Coaster with dyed fabric and yarn.
