Kuroshio Market and tuna cutting demonstration

Kuroshio Market, a maguro theme park
Located within an artificial island of Wakayama Marina City, the Kuroshio Market is a bustling fish market offering freshly caught seafood not only from Wakayama but from all over Japan, letting you savor delicious marine products including unfrozen maguro (tuna). Tuna, the highlight of the market, are caught in Katsuura finishing port that boasts the largest catches of raw tuna in the country as well as shipped from Kushimoto where tuna farming is thriving. The tuna cutting demonstration that lets you see an entire tuna being expertly filleted right in front of your eyes is a must-see.
Must-see tuna cutting demonstration
The tuna cutting demonstration is held every day at the market. See how the just-caught, fatty tuna in its perfect state is sliced and filleted by professional fishmonger with intricate cutting techniques and knife skills. Watch the spectacular show right in front of your eyes as he explains about the cutting process and different parts of the tuna. You can purchase the just filleted fish or immediately savor them as sushi or a sashimi bowl. If you are lucky, you may be offered to taste a sample or purchase rare flesh that is usually hard to get. The demonstrations may also use 100% cultured Kindai Maguro tuna, which is recently gaining attention for being larger and having a richer taste than natural, wild-caught tuna.
Savor the delicious food only available in the market
The Kuroshio Market also has a food court where you can taste mouthwatering fresh foods. You can barbeque just-purchased selections from the market such as fresh seafood, vegetables and meat right at the table in the seaside terrace. There are also restaurants nearby that offer all-you-can-eat buffets that let you enjoy tuna and other local specialties. One visit is definitely not enough to experience all the delicacies the market has to offer. The melt-in-the-mouth "otoro nigiri," sushi made with the fattiest portion of the tuna, as well as a rice bowl of the selected seafood of the day sold in limited quantities are also very popular.
A great selection of fresh seafood and local specialties
In addition to the select cuts of tuna fish that was just filleted at the demonstration, the market offers a great variety of marine products from all over Japan such as fresh and live fish, dried seafood and culinary delicacies. Be sure to also check Wakayama's pickled plums, soy sauce and sake. The rich mikan mandarin juices and umeshu plum wines are particularly recommended. The plum wines made from premium Kishu Nanko-Ume plums are sold by weight, so tasting different types to find your own favorite can be also fun.
Porto Europe: A Mediterranean-inspired townscape inside Wakayama Marina City
Another attraction of the artificial island Wakayama Marina City is Porto Europe. Designed to resemble Mediterranean coastal towns, the amusement park exudes an exotic atmosphere. Packed with attractions such as the high-diving water ride, a roller coaster and Ferris wheel, the park entertains children and adults alike. Also, the beautiful landscape of the "European" towns is definitely photo-worthy. Other than that, there are a resort hotel with all rooms facing the ocean and the Kishu Kuroshio Onsen hot spring bath with a beautiful yacht harbor view, making the entire island a great resort destination.
