White Wall Townscape of Yanai

Save to List

Goldfish lanterns swim around the historic town of Yanai in Yamaguchi Prefecture

Located in the eastern part of Yamaguchi, the city of Yanai preserves beautiful white-walled townscapes from 200 years ago in the Furuichi and Kanaya districts. Travel back to the Edo period (1603-1868) as you walk on the stone-paved streets lined with houses of white-plastered walls and lattice windows. During the Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival held every August, the town is decorated in delightful goldfish lanterns.

Experience making your own goldfish lantern

The cute and humorous goldfish lanterns with lean red and white bodies and big bright eyes are a hit among children as well. Experience making this traditional craft passed down from the Edo period in Yanai at Yanai Nishigura, a cultural experience facility which was renovated from a former soy sauce warehouse.

Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival

Held every August, the Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival is the biggest summer festival in Yanai. During the festival, the town streets and white wall districts become the venue for various events such as the goldfish lantern dance and the goldfish float parade, attracting numerous visitors.
