Kencho Promenade
The promenade that leads to the entrance of the Kumamoto Prefectural Office is lined with 54 Ginkgo biloba trees, which are at their most beautiful around mid-November.
The number 54 is said to have come from the 540,000 Koku, the rice-based stipend paid to the Higo domain in feudal times.
The Gingko leaves cover the ground all around the trees, turning the promenade into a carpet of gold. During the day, you can encounter the scene of children playing joyfully in the leaves. In recent times, the sight has attracted not only locals, but visitors from outside the prefecture and even international tourists.
The promenade is lit up at night in November, creating a magical sight that is different again from the beautiful scene during the day.
