Tatehana Wharf Morning Market

Save to List

A massive "town" that emerges only on Sunday mornings

The Tatehana Wharf morning market in Hachinohe City is considered one of Japan's largest of its kind. Every Sunday, as dawn breaks, the usually calm, ordinary fishing port suddenly becomes bustling with activity. Approximately 300 stalls lining the 800-meter stretch of the port is more than just a market; it seems almost like a town. Visitors will be delighted by the rich variety of goods produced in Hachinohe including fresh seafood, vegetables, fruits and prepared foods.

A chaotic market that sells practically everything

You can find pretty much anything at the market. A variety of food ranging from fresh and dried seafood, vegetables, fruits, flowers, prepared foods, coffee, pastries and baked goods are sold. Even knives, antiques, sewing machines and much more can be found at the chaotic assortment of stalls. There used to be even people selling cars in the past! Often there is live music playing behind the stalls and many people come to have breakfast or socialize with friends to enjoy the massive morning market in their own style.
