Nita-Toge
At Nita Pass in Unzen-shi, Nagasaki, you can enjoy viewing autumn foliage and other seasonal scenery of the mountain from the ropeway. You can also feast your eyes on the magnificent views from the observation deck. It takes around 20 minutes by car to climb the 8.2-km-long Nita Pass ring road that meanders through the mountain. From the second observation deck just before arriving at Nita Pass, you can look out upon the entirety of Mount Heiseishinzan and the mountains of Unzen. You can also observe the remnants of the flow of debris and pyroclastic flow from the 1990 eruption of Mount Fugendake, which will really bring home the perils of nature. On days of good weather, you can also see Mount Aso across the water.
In mid-May, 100,000 Miyama Kirishima (Kyushu azaleas) flowers reach full bloom and dye the slopes of Mount Myokendake to a bright pink color. The bright, fresh greenery is beautiful in early summer. It's 7 to 8 degrees Celsius cooler than the flatlands, making it great as a summer resort.
The autumn leaves are at their peak from around the end of October until early November. The contrast of the three colors of red, yellow, and green is beautiful, particularly the Momiji and Komine maple trees. In addition, Mount Fugendake Autumn Leaves Forest is designated as a natural treasure, and the aerial view from the ropeway is breathtaking.
In winter, hoarfrost can be seen from December to March. Clouds and fog are blown by icy north winds, stick to the branches of trees, and accumulate. Crystals grow on the branches of trees create beautiful natural works of art that glitter in the light.
