Experience the history and culture of Edo and Tokyo!
The Edo-Tokyo Museum is focused on the history and culture of Edo (old Tokyo) and modern-day Tokyo, characterized by its unique appearance reminiscent of a raised-flooring type warehouse. Using original materials and replicas, the permanent exhibition showcases the history and culture of about 400 years after Ieyasu Tokugawa entered metropolitan Edo. The exhibition room on the first floor features special exhibitions with various themes.
Nihonbashi
Nihonbashi Bridge was first built in 1603 and played an important role as the starting point for various highways. In the hall, visitors can see a scale model that shows the northern half of Nihonbashi Bridge during the first half of the 1800s. Japanese cypress was used for the restoration based on the reconstruction records and paintings.
Stage for Sukeroku
The museum showcases Sukeroku, a representative program of Edo Kabuki in a fictional setting. Sukeroku was first performed by Danjuro Ichikawa II in 1713 and later was completed as Sukeroku Yukari no Edo Zakura. The main characters are Sukeroku and his girlfriend Agemaki, as well as Ikyu, who loves Agemaki. The story unveiled focusing on the whereabouts of a lost treasure sword.
