Shiraishijima Island

Enjoy marine sports and the mystical Shiraishi Odori dance on the beach of the scenic remote island in Setonaikai National Park
Shiraishijima Island floats in the Seto Inland Sea, located 11 kilometers from Kasaoka Port in the southwestern part of Okayama Prefecture. The area is designated as the Setonaikai National Park and known as one of the best swimming beaches in Okayama with stunning scenery of amazing rock formations. The mystical Shiraishi Odori dance is said to have started as a ritual for those deceased in the Genpei War (1180-1185) and is held annually from August 14 to 16.
Shiraishijima Island Observatory
Summer is not the only season great for visiting Shiraishijima Island. Along with Kairyu-ji Temple and Yoroi-iwa rock, a highlight of the island is a hiking trail to explore the 150-meter-high Mount Takayama, which has an observatory where you can enjoy the amazing view of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, picturesque mountains of the Shikoku region and the Seto Ohashi Bridge in the distance. Encounter various strange and giant rock formations along the trail, which make excellent photo spots. Be sure to wear hiking-appropriate clothes and shoes.
Shiraishijima Swimming Beach
Stretching 500 meters long, the beautiful white sand and clear waters make this beach one of the best in Okayama Prefecture. Enjoy marine sports like sea kayaking and wind surfing, as there are numerous inns along the beach and facilities such as showers are available. The whole family can delight in the pristine sea, which is so clear that small fishes can be spotted even on the edge of the surf, and the gently sloped sandy beach that glitters with colorful seashells.
Kairyu-ji Temple
The temple located along the hiking trail is associated with the renowned priest Kobo Daishi from the 9th century. In 806, Kobo Daishi is said to have visited Shiraishijima during his return trip from Tang dynasty China, and trained for 37 days under the massive rock in the inner temple. Upon departing from the island, Kobo Daishi determined the land as sacred, and carved and enshrined a Buddha statue. Years later, a temple was established here in dedication to those who perished during the Genpei War fought around the Seto Inland Sea. While the current inner temple was built in 1743, its strong bearing against the hulking rock remains to be a sight to behold.
