Takashima Island

Save to List

Island of fishermen and azaleas with historic sites reminiscent of ancient legends

Legend has it that Emperor Jimmu, known as the first emperor of Japan in the country's oldest history book, stayed on Takashima Island around 2,500 years ago. Located about 8 kilometers offshore of Kasaoka Port in southwestern Okayama Prefecture, Takashima is also famous as the island of azaleas, blossoming pink with native torch azaleas in April. Climb to the top of the island's highest point on Mount Kamiura to enjoy the spectacular panorama. Also, be sure to savor the delicious fresh seafood offered at the inns run by local fishermen.

Fertility Rock

This giant rock found on a mountain in the western part of the island is called Koharami-ishi, or Fertility Rock. One of the largest rocks enshrining women in western Japan, the Fertility Rock in Takashima has been worshipped as a god of good marriage, fertility, smooth delivery of babies and feminine illnesses. Since the rock was also used as a high viewing post for sardine drag net fishing in the old days, climb on top of the Fertility Rock to enjoy a sweeping view of the sea.

Mount Kamiura and Takashima Angu Ruins Monument

Two of Japan's oldest chronicles, "Kojiki" and "Nihon Shoki", state that during his eastern expedition from the Kyushu region, Emperor Jimmu stayed for several years in the Kibi-no-Takashima-no-miya shrine. Locals have believed from ancient times that Takashima-no-miya was, in fact, this island. Mount Kamiura is said to be the place where Emperor Jimmu held divination rituals, and a large stone monument is erected on its peak today, called the Takashima Angu Ruins Monument. From the mountain, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Seto Inland Sea and a gorgeous sunrise.
