Mushima Island

An island famous for its white lighthouse and daffodils against the clear blue sky
Mushima Island is the southernmost of the Kasaoka Islands, located about 22 kilometers from Kasaoka Port in Okayama Prefecture. Its landmark is the first lighthouse constructed in the prefecture, standing atop a cape on the southern part of the island. Surrounding the lighthouse are about 100,000 wild daffodils, their white and yellow flowers blooming around January to February every year. The scenery of the white lighthouse and sweet-smelling daffodils against the clear blue sky is a must-see sight.
Mushima Lighthouse
The 13-meter-tall Mushima Lighthouse is a symbolic landmark of the island. The strait on the south of the island has been a busy east-west waterway for ships crossing the Seto Inland Sea since ancient times. Due to the strait's strong current, a lighthouse, the first in Okayama Prefecture, was constructed here in 1922 to safeguard the route. Today, the lighthouse is an amazing spot for watching the large vessels still frequenting the waters, as well as gazing at the Shonai Peninsula of the Shikoku region and many other islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
Daffodils on Mushima Island
Daffodils can be enjoyed in various parts of the island starting in mid-January and in full bloom around February. Especially breathtaking are the 100,000 daffodil flowers covering the sloped path leading up to the lighthouse. The "Daffodil Trail" is a heartening creation by the hands of students of Mushima Elementary School and volunteers, taking daffodils that were originally growing wild on Mount Oishi and replanting them along the pathway. Thanks to their efforts, Mushima has become widely known as the "Island of the Lighthouse and Daffodils." The white flowers blossom every year in early spring, spreading their sweet fragrance all around and attracting many visitors during the season.
