Meiji Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue

Stroll along the ginkgo-lined avenue of Meiji Jingu Gaien
Constructed as the outer garden of Meiji Jingu Shrine in 1926, Meiji Jingu Gaien is a true oasis of Tokyo with various sports facilities and greens that transform with the four seasons. Stroll along the avenue lined with ginkgo trees, a symbol of Tokyo, especially beautiful during the autumn foliage season, which is one of the most famous sceneries of the metropolis.
Picturesque scenery
Meiji Jingu Gaien’s Ginkgo Avenue displays a variety of faces throughout the year. Buds signal the arrival of the spring season, followed by fresh green leaves catching the summer sun. Autumn creates the famous golden foliage tunnel, which sheds into naked trees that stand stunningly against the clear winter air. The straight avenue is lined on both sides with around 150 ginkgo trees and leads up to the regal Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, creating a picturesque scenery. Relax and take in the beautiful view from the benches along the avenue.
Ginkgo Avenue glows golden on autumn nights
The golden tunnel of Ginkgo Avenue is spectacular in the daytime but shows another fascinating display at night with the annual lighting event held during the autumn foliage season. The warm glow of light dazzles the individual ginkgo leaves like jewels, creating a breathtaking scenery with the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery in the background. When taking photos, be sure to stay safe by minding the other pedestrians and traffic around you.
Enjoy sports activities and great food
With beautiful natural environments blending in with various sports facilities, Meiji Jingu Gaien is an energizing spot for its many visitors, from exploring the lush green gardens and the Ginkgo Avenue to cheering the professional baseball games at Jingu Baseball Stadium and enjoying winter sports at the ice-skating rink. The area also holds a host of events in every season. Food stalls at these events offer great opportunities for experiencing traditional Japanese cultures as well as delicious foods made with locally sourced ingredients.
