Mount Haruna
Beautifully shaped mountain similar to Mount Fuji, Gunma's Mount Haruna offers fun mountaineering as well as sightseeing at lakes and shrines
Mount Haruna has a beautifully symmetrical shape reminiscent of Mount Fuji and is sometimes called Haruna Fuji. Visitors can leisurely climb the mountain on a ropeway and enjoy various activities at Haruna Lake situated at an elevation of around 1,100 meters, such as boating and cruising on the pleasure boat. The area is also known as the setting of the popular Japanese manga "Initial D".
Haruna Shrine
Founded around 1,400 years ago, Haruna Shrine is dedicated to the mountain god of Mount Haruna and situated on vast 15-hectare grounds, with the approach to the shrine from the entrance alone being about 700 meters long. As you walk up the approach, valuable buildings designated as important cultural properties come into view one after another. In recent years, Haruna Shrine is also garnering attention as a major power spot in the Kanto region.
Fireworks over Haruna Lake
Every year at the beginning of August, a fireworks festival is held overlooking Haruna Lake. Numerous paper lanterns are floated onto the lake after making wishes upon them, followed by a spectacular show of 3,000 shots of fireworks over the lake. Marvel at the sight of the colorful fireworks brightening both the night sky and the lake surface, coupled with their echoes resonating in the surrounding mountains.
Haruna Lake Illumination Festa
Every year from early to late December, over 500,000 light bulbs fantastically illuminate the lake in front of the Haruna Lodge. During the period, various events are held including laser shows and fireworks displays, in addition to nighttime operations of the Mount Haruna Ropeway every night with panoramic views of the city lights and illuminations of the lake from the mountain top. (Please note that ropeway operation may be canceled due to weather conditions.)
