A pilgrimage lets you pause your busy life to connect with the natural world. Appreciate its beauty and embrace its calmness as you refresh your mind and rejuvenate your body. Approach your henro with an open mind and spirit on a path to inner peace.
First on the list of the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Henro, Ryozen-ji Temple is a place of historical and spiritual significance. The scenic temple grounds include a two-storied wooden pagoda and a statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy.
Tairyu-ji Temple sits near the summit of Mount Tairyu-ji, reached by a cable car with seasonal views of the Naka River, Mount Tsurugi, and Kii Channel. Or feeling adventurous? Get there by a challenging but rewarding hike through the picturesque landscape.

When you reach Temple No. 37 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, look up. Iwamoto-ji Temple is renowned for its ceiling of 575 vibrant paintings donated by people all over Japan. Spend a night in temple lodging and enjoy a view of the grounds and rooftop sauna.
From the hilltop Hanta-ji Temple behold a panoramic view of Matsuyama Castle and the Seto Inland Sea. Explore the peaceful temple grounds with a statue of the Buddhist deity Kangiten and the stone pillar memorializing the 10,000 pilgrims before you.
Embrace Buddhist asceticism by dining on shojin ryori (traditional Japanese cuisine). The vegetarian dish of Buddhist monks uses seasonal vegetables and seaweed, aligning with the pursuit of spiritual and physical well-being on your pilgrimage.
After a long day on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, replenish your body and soul in the therapeutic waters of Dogo Onsen. Enjoy one of Japan’s oldest hot springs that's been healing everyone from locals to royals for around 3,000 years.
After a soothing soak at Dogo Onsen, continue your spiritual journey to Okuboji Temple, the 88th and final stop of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Here, the Medicine Buddha (Yakushi Nyorai) is uniquely depicted holding a conch shell, an uncommon attribute said to blow away misfortune, so conclude your pilgrimage with gratitude and renewed hope.
