Fushimi townscape
Fushimi, a town of history, water and sake breweries
Famous for its delicious sake, Fushimi is located in the southeastern part of Kyoto City and prospered as a castle town of Fushimi Castle, built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of the most powerful samurai generals of the 16th century. The town still retains the lively atmosphere of a temple town and port town. Cruise on the Jikkoku-bune boat, a transport ship in the Edo Period (1603-1868), and sail along the Hori-kawa River to enjoy the beautiful townscape and sake breweries while feeling the gentle breeze.
Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum
The museum introduces Fushimi's sake brewing techniques and the history of Japanese sake in an easy-to-understand manner. Historical items are exhibited to narrate the history of Gekkeikan, one of Japan's leading sake manufacturers, from its founding to the present. Inside the museum, brewing songs sung by craftsmen from generation to generation are played, reproducing the atmosphere of the brewery of olden days and evoking the sake culture rooted in Fushimi. After the tour, visitors can taste the premium Ginjo sake and plum wine in the lobby.
Gokonomiya Shrine
Legend has it that around the 9th century, fragrant water able to treat illnesses gushed out from the precincts, and Emperor Seiwa gave the shrine its name, meaning the "Shrine of Aromatic Water." True to its role as the guardian god of Fushimi, the shrine grounds are decorated with barrels of all Fushimi sake brands. Among the distinctive architecture of the Momoyama Period (late 16th to early 17th century), the front gate and the main shrine adorned with richly colored engravings are designated as important cultural properties. The beautiful stone garden related to Edo Period artist Kobori Enshu is also a must-see.
