Explore culture and arts through Japanese gardens in the autumn

Japanese gardens are created in various styles cultivated over their long history. A couple of examples are water gardens centered around a pond and dry gardens, which portray mountains and water without actually using any water. Marvel at the high artistry of these gardens, which take advantage of the unique aspects of each region and utilize rocks, sand, ponds and other objects to recreate natural scenery within the garden. In the autumn, the maple leaves turn a blazing red and often create a vivid contrast with the green of the pine trees, popular as “bonsai.”

Why not set out on a journey to admire amazing Japanese gardens? Kenrokuen Garden (Ishikawa) is counted as one of Japan’s three most beautiful gardens. Mifuneyama Rakuen (Saga) is breathtaking at any time of day. At the Matsudaya Hotel (Yamaguchi), you can gaze at the wonderfully well-maintained garden from your own room.

From November to mid-December, you can observe the gardener’s traditional technique known as “yukizuri,” which uses numerous ropes to hang the branches of pine trees to protect them from the heavy snowfall.

After enjoying strolling around the garden, take a break in a teahouse with Japanese tea and sweets. The small garden leading to the traditional teahouse, also called a dewy ground, is designed with meticulously placed stones and plants.

Mifuneyama Rakuen is said to have been built following a design created by a painter. This masterpiece of a garden is beautiful in autumn, showing a vibrant contrast of red foliage and evergreen trees during the day, and is fantastically lit up at night.

At night, gaze at the colorful foliage with a glass of sake in hand at the teahouse bar (open only to guests staying in the adjacent facilities). From July to early November, enjoy the dreamlike illumination of koi and a boat.

Sesshutei Garden in Joei-ji Temple, located in Yamaguchi, is a famous dry garden that portrays mountains and waters using only rocks and sand. The quiet calm of the temple grounds evokes the traditional Japanese idea of “wabi-sabi.”

Lodgings are a big part of the fun of traveling. Stay at an inn or hotel with a Japanese garden, and enjoy the hot springs, autumn delicacies and exploring various gardens for a relaxing trip.

The indoor bath is sourced from natural hot springs.

Nishikigoi, called “swimming jewels” for their exquisite appearance, are said to bring good luck. The soothing colorful carp are often found swimming freely in water gardens.
