Kusatsu Onsen
Kusatsu Onsen, one of Japan's best three hot springs
Located in Gunma Prefecture, Kusatsu Onsen is one of Japan's best three hot springs and constantly ranks as the top hot spring resort destination. At the center of the quaint resort town is the Yubatake (hot spring field), the symbol of Kusatsu. Day-trip visitors can also enjoy the large outdoor bath in Sai-no-Kawara Park.
While the spring water temperature of Kusatsu Onsen is too high for bathing on its own, it would lessen the spring quality if diluted with water. Therefore, in Kusatsu, a method to cool down the hot water by stirring using wooden planks, called Yumomi, has been the tradition. Today, performances of Yumomi along with singing to the song "Kusatsu-bushi" are held every day. Visitors can also try their hands at Yumomi, with special gifts for participants afterward.
Visitors can rent and dress in yukata robes at Goza-no-Yu, a public bath facility located near the Yubatake. A variety of beautifully colored designs are available, with over 600 different yukata and obi sash combinations for women. Men's yukata are also available. You can get assistance with putting on a yukata, have your photo taken or even go on an outing in the quaint resort town donning a yukata.
Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort is conveniently located within walking distance from the Yubatake. At 1,200 meters above sea level, the ski resort boasts excellent quality powder snow. There is also a Kid's Park where families can enjoy playing in the snow and sledding. During the summer, the slope becomes a play zone for riding buggies as well as enjoying barbecues.
