Hitoyoshi Onsen

Hitoyoshi Onsen flourished as the castle town of the Hitoyoshi domain and preserves its picturesque historic townscape to this day. Along the Kuma River, there are many ryokan inns where you can enjoy the abundant hot spring from over 50 sources in the area. The weak alkaline carbonate spring water is known for its soft, moisturizing texture. There are also over 20 public baths in the city, still serving as popular places for gathering and relaxation for the residents.

Aoi Aso Shrine, a national treasure

Aoi Aso Shrine is the first structure in Kumamoto Prefecture to be designated as a national treasure. The shrine building, completed in 1613, is constructed with details unique to the medieval Kuma area and in the Momoyama period (1568-1600) architectural style.

Eikoku-ji Temple

The famous "ghost temple" is known for the scroll of a ghost. Look closely and you may spot the face of a man around the chest of the ghost in the drawing.
