Miyama's Thatched Roof Village is located in Nantan City in northern Kyoto Prefecture, about two hours from Kyoto City. In the quiet village surrounded by beautiful mountains, 39 thatched roof houses are preserved and resided in a traditional lifestyle. The preservation of the historic landscape has been highly appraised and has also been selected as an important preservation district of historic buildings of Japan. English guide walk through the Thatched Roof Village
An English-speaking local guide will introduce how the thatched roof works and how the residents live in a guided walk. People still live in these thatched roof houses, and behind the beautiful scenery humans and nature actually coexist. At the Miyama Folklore Museum, you can see the inside of the thatched roof houses and the tools used in the traditional satoyama, a village in coexistence with the mountains. The local tour makes an excellent day trip to Miyama Town.
The Little Indigo Museum
Opened by Hiroyuki Shindo, an indigo dyeing artist, the small art museum in the Thatched Roof Village was actually the largest and oldest in the region. He turned the village headman's thatched roof house into an art museum and exhibits his rare indigo dyeing collection from around the world. The atelier on the first floor is filled with an indigo dye-vat, so you can observe how indigo dyeing has been done from the olden days.
Minshuku Matabe inn
Stay at a thatched roof house, gaze at the beautiful starry sky and take a refreshing morning walk. Why not enjoy the life in satoyama in the unspoiled natural scenery of Japan? Savor the jidori chicken sukiyaki hot pot for dinner and relax on a futon in a Japanese-style room.
