The Seto Inland Sea is located between the Honshu and Shikoku regions, with the coastal areas
also commonly referred to as ‘Setouchi’. Home to over a thousand islands, both big
and small, the Seto Inland Sea is well-known for its outstanding natural beauty with
spectacular sea and mountain views abound.
How to get there?
It takes about 80 minutes to get to Takamatsu Airport, which is located within the Setouchi
area, from Haneda Airport. The limousine bus ride from Takamatsu Airport to Takamatsu Port
takes about 45 minutes. From there, you can get to the Setouchi Islands by ferry.

The Setouchi Triennale takes place in the picturesque Seto Inland Sea,
once every three years on twelve islands and two ports in Kagawa and Okayama Prefectures.
The theme is “Restoration of the Sea,”
and the art festival aims to revitalize formerly-thriving island communities in this beautiful natural environment
and transform the region into a Sea of Hope.

NAOSHIMA
Precious cultural assets such as Onna Bunraku puppetry remain on Naoshima, where
smelters fueled the town's development. Now the island is known as a mecca of modern
art.
Teshima is the next island following Naoshima to be developed as an art island in
recent years, and is a place where visitors can enjoy abundant nature, such as
terraced rice fields and white sandy beaches.
The island is just a 20-minute ferry ride away from Takamatsu, and has been lovingly
named "Onigashima" after the famous cave in the legend of Momotaro.
Ogijima is an island with little flat ground and plenty of slopes. Hike up to
Toyotamahime Shrine which is situated on a hill to enjoy the picturesque view of the
Seto Inland Sea from the stairs.
With the entire island being dedicated to Oshima Seishoen Sanatorium for leprosy
patients, Oshima is an extremely quiet island surrounded by sea and trees.
Architecture related to art, such as Inujima Seirensho Art Museum (which is
constructed from the ruins of a former refinery) and Art House Project, can be found
all around the island.
Land reclamation is ongoing on at Shamijima at the moment. Nakanda Beach, from where
you can see the Seto Ohashi Bridge, is a historical spot where artefacts such as Jomon
pottery have been excavated.
Honjima is the island where the Shiwaku Marines were active during the Sengoku period,
and is still home to about 100 historical cityscapes which are carefully preserved
today.
Most of the island is made up of mountains, and you can appreciate the traditional
houses that have been built since the Edo period, as well as the streets lined with
stone walls on the steep slopes.
Dried sardine processing plants line up along the port here in Ibukijima which is
famous for producing dried sardines. The town is made up of many steep slopes and
narrow alleys like a maze.
Besides art appreciation, you can also enjoy the beautiful scenery on each island,
interact with the locals, and visit the sightseeing spots in Takamatsu City.
